Washington Street Parking Garage

Syracuse, New York

  • Price: $23 Million
  • Type: Civic / Government
  • Purpose: Municipal, Parking

Property Description

The site for the City of Syracuse’s planned 1,200-car parking garage looked promising. Its Washington Street locating would be close to Niagara Mohawk, Armory Square are the central business district. There was only one obstacle. Onondaga Creek ran through the site, cutting it into two distant parcels.

It too Hueber-Breuer ingenuity to turn the architect’s vision of two separate structures joined by an 85-foot concrete span into reality. Hueber-Breuer’s crews saw that construction proceeded on schedule despite fluctuations in the creek flow and the need to re-route a water main pipe that crossed the site. Soil conditions at the site carried so much that each end of the garage has a different type of concrete foundation.

The eye-pleasing Washington Street Garage was one of the first in the area with a decorative skin – a painted aluminum screening custom-built by Hueber-Breuer. Pedestrian access to a planned creek walk has been provided from two streets that border the site.
